Berlin, 22 Aug 2007 – Germany’s largest drug maker has announced plans to build its own erectile dysfunction treatment, Viagra, next year.
German drug giant Pfizer, a major contributor to Viagra’s sales, has launched a drug to treat erectile dysfunction and will be marketing it in the country in 2007.
Viagra, which is sold as sildenafil citrate, is the first line of treatment for erectile dysfunction and is an effective treatment for the majority of men over age 50.
“This is the first time that we are in the context of our company’s long-term investment in our product portfolio,” Pfizer’s chief executive officer, Hank McKinnell, told the German daily newspaper,. “This is one of the first new products we will be marketing in Germany.”
“It is good that we have been able to focus our product pipeline and strengthen our product line-up,” he said.
Viagra is available as a prescription and can be purchased in pharmacies, although it is not sold directly to the public.
Viagra was launched in the US in 2007 for a total of 5 million people with a doctor’s prescription. It was the second-most-prescription-delivered drug in the US after Propecia, an anti-ulcerant.
“Our product portfolio has always been very strong in Germany,” McKinnell said.
Viagra will be launched in the US, as well as in the UK, in late 2007, with a price target of up to 25% lower than in the US.
Pfizer’s global development team has estimated that it will be the largest drugmaker in Europe since it was founded in 1849.
But Pfizer is also planning to launch its own erectile dysfunction treatment, which will be called.
The erectile dysfunction drug is approved to treat erectile dysfunction in men, such as men under 18, by increasing blood flow to the penis.
In addition, the drug is to be used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, which is a type of high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs, causing them to narrow.
